About the position

The Special Education Paraeducator at LBW Elementary School is responsible for providing educational, physical, and emotional support to students with disabilities. This role involves working closely with students to help them benefit from the District's special education program, under the guidance of special education and general education teachers.

Responsibilities

  • Work with small groups of students to reinforce material introduced by the teacher or therapist.
  • Assist in implementing strategies and accommodations based on students' Individual Education Programs (IEP).
  • Guide students in recitation and other curriculum tasks.
  • Read to students and listen to them read, participating in oral communication.
  • Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work assigned by the teacher.
  • Serve as a resource for the multi-disciplinary evaluation team when requested.
  • Alert teachers to any problems or special information about individual students.
  • Provide information and help to substitute teachers in the absence of the general education teacher.
  • Maintain confidentiality and ethical behavior regarding student information.
  • Participate in in-service training programs as assigned.
  • Help students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
  • Assist students with physical tasks such as dressing, moving between rooms, and using the lavatory.
  • Assist with lunch, snack, and cleanup routines.
  • Supervise students during emergency drills, assemblies, recesses, and field trips.
  • Accompany students to classes and assist in meeting their needs in the general education classroom.
  • Implement behavioral management programs for individual students.
  • Assist teachers with crisis intervention and discipline.
  • Help new students adjust to the school environment.
  • Assist in medical care issues that may arise.
  • Facilitate the use of a visual schedule for students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or special education director.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience working with children, especially those with disabilities, preferred.
  • Ability to follow directions and work collaboratively with teachers and therapists.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and ethical standards.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in special education settings.
  • Knowledge of behavioral management techniques.
  • Familiarity with Individual Education Programs (IEPs).
