About the position

The Special Education Paraeducator / Personal Care Assistant (PCA) plays a crucial role in supporting students with special needs in a collaborative educational environment. This position requires a strong commitment to assisting students in their daily activities and ensuring their individual health and behavioral needs are met as outlined in their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). The PCA will work closely with classroom teachers, special educators, and other building specialists to create a supportive learning atmosphere. Candidates should possess an energetic and progressive mindset, demonstrating a willingness to collaborate effectively with building staff to enhance student learning and well-being. In this role, the PCA will provide essential services that include assistance with eating, dressing, grooming, and other personal care needs. They will also support students with behavioral challenges and provide assistance during transportation on the school bus. The PCA will be responsible for reteaching and reinforcing academic, behavioral, or language skills as designed by the special education teacher. Additionally, they will assist teachers in preparing classroom materials and resources, ensuring that the educational environment is conducive to learning. Participation in professional development is a key aspect of this position. The PCA is expected to attend grade-level meetings at least once a month and engage in weekly professional development sessions, instructional coaching, and other opportunities for growth. This commitment to professional development is essential for maintaining high standards of support for students and enhancing the overall educational experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide services related to students' individual health and behavioral needs as documented in IEPs.
  • Assist students with eating, dressing, grooming, toilet needs, and activities of daily living.
  • Offer behavioral assistance and support on the school bus.
  • Reteach and reinforce academic, behavior, or language skills as designed by the special education teacher.
  • Support teachers in the preparation of classroom materials and resources.
  • Attend grade level meetings at least monthly.
  • Participate in professional growth opportunities including weekly professional development meetings and instructional coaching.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of post-high school education or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Familiarity with schools and working with students is required.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is preferred.

Nice-to-haves
