About the position

The Special Education Resource Paraprofessional position at Woodland Middle School is designed for individuals who are committed to supporting students with special needs. This role primarily involves working one-on-one with a student under the guidance of the Instructional/PPS staff, ensuring that the student can fully engage with the instructional program. The paraprofessional will assist in implementing the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) and will be responsible for various tasks that facilitate the student's learning and development. The paraprofessional will play a crucial role in delivering special education services, which includes devising strategies to reinforce learning materials based on the student's unique needs and abilities. Responsibilities will also include operating and maintaining classroom equipment, assisting with instructional assignments, and guiding independent study and enrichment activities. The paraprofessional will supervise the student during various school activities, including emergency drills and field trips, and will be responsible for checking attendance and assisting with data collection as needed. In addition to academic support, the paraprofessional will help the student with daily living skills, ensuring that they are comfortable and able to participate fully in school life. Maintaining confidentiality and ethical behavior is paramount, as is the ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff. The position requires participation in professional development and training to enhance effectiveness in supporting students with special needs.

Responsibilities

  • Work primarily with an individual student in the delivery of special education services consistent with the IEP.
  • Assist the Instructional/PPS staff in devising special strategies for introducing or reinforcing material or skills based on an understanding of the individual student.
  • Operate and care for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
  • Help the student with the completion of instructional assignments after they have been introduced by the Instructional/PPS staff.
  • Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the Instructional/PPS staff.
  • Assist with the supervision of the student during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
  • Check the student's notebooks, correct papers, and supervise testing and make-up work, as assigned by the teacher.
  • Check and record student attendance as necessary, assist with data collection as necessary and recording of information.
  • Help the student(s) with daily living skills, clothing, lunch, snack, clean-up routines, wash-up and toileting routines.
  • Alert appropriate staff to any problem or special information about the student.
  • Provide information and help any substitute teacher(s) assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
  • Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of certified staff.
  • Participate in inservice training programs, as assigned.
  • Inform supervisor of the absence of assigned student for possible reassignment of duties.
  • Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as assigned by the Instructional/PPS staff, principal, supervisor, director or other administrator.

Requirements

  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator's, Paraprofessional, or Substitute License registered in Lake County.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 60 credit hours of college credit.
  • Preferred classroom experience, Spanish-speaking.
