About the position

The Special Education Self-Contained Teacher is responsible for providing tailored educational experiences to students with special needs, focusing on their intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. This role involves developing and implementing lesson plans, managing classroom behavior, and collaborating with other educators to ensure that students receive the support they need to succeed academically and socially.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the district's curriculum requirements and accommodate individual student differences.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional strategies, materials, and technology that reflect understanding of students' learning styles and needs.
  • Conduct assessments of student learning styles and behaviors to inform instructional activities and behavioral plans.
  • Prepare ARD/IEP documents accurately and participate in ARD Committee meetings, distributing documents to parents and staff as required.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to modify curricula for special education students according to IEP guidelines.
  • Work with staff to determine instructional goals and methods according to district requirements.
  • Provide support with self-help skills including social skills, toileting, eating, and dressing.
  • Plan and assign work to instructional aides and oversee their completion.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Serve as a positive role model for students and support the school district's mission.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for students' development.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and use Behavior Intervention Plans as needed.
  • Take precautions to protect students, equipment, and facilities.
  • Compile and maintain all required reports and records.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  • Attend faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Perform any additional duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.
  • Valid Texas Special Education Certification.
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with Core Content endorsements (preferred).
  • Demonstrated competency in the assigned grade levels and corresponding academic subjects.
  • Knowledge of the ARD Committee process and IEP goal setting and implementation.
  • Ability to instruct students and manage moderate to severe behavior.
  • Knowledge of common learning characteristics of students with autism, intellectual disabilities, and emotional disabilities.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • One year of student teaching or approved internship (preferred).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with adaptive and specialized instructional equipment.
  • Familiarity with behavior intervention strategies.

Benefits

  • Starting salary of $72,000 including a $10,000 Special Education hiring incentive and a $6,000 Late hire bonus.
