About the position

Wissahickon Charter School (WCS) is seeking dedicated special education teachers for the 2024-25 school year. The primary responsibility of the special education teacher is to ensure that students with disabilities progress academically and socially, as measured by their achievement on Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals. The ideal candidate will be committed to enhancing the knowledge and skills of students with disabilities and will be relentless in addressing the diverse learning styles, needs, and interests of these students. Experience in an inclusive, urban school setting is highly desirable, and the candidate should thrive in a collaborative work environment. The special education teacher will develop and implement IEPs that translate into measurable success for students, establishing and maintaining a learning environment that excites, invests, and motivates students to achieve both academic and behavioral expectations. This role involves designing and facilitating modified, differentiated unit and lesson plans that align with WCS' curriculum, as well as supporting general education teachers in including students with special needs in their classrooms. The teacher will also implement remedial education as necessary and work collaboratively with the Director of Learning Support, grade teams, teaching assistants, and other staff to support student growth. In addition to these responsibilities, the special education teacher will consistently implement WCS' student management practices, mentor and coach students on self-regulation and organizational skills, and establish and maintain relationships with families through regular communication and opportunities for involvement. Monitoring student progress and using data to drive instruction and behavior interventions is crucial, as is exemplifying WCS' CARES values in all interactions with students, families, and colleagues. The teacher will seek out and be receptive to feedback to improve instructional and culture-building skills and participate in all professional development, team planning, and data analysis meetings. Other duties may be assigned by the administrative team as needed.
