About the position

The Special Education Teacher Assistant at North Pitt High School plays a crucial role in supporting students with special needs in their educational journey. This position involves working closely with certified special education teachers to implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and provide tailored support to students in both classroom and extracurricular settings. The assistant will help facilitate learning by providing one-on-one assistance, small group instruction, and support during various activities throughout the school day. Additionally, the role requires maintaining a positive and inclusive environment that fosters the growth and development of all students, particularly those with disabilities. The Special Education Teacher Assistant will also be responsible for monitoring student progress, documenting behavioral and academic data, and communicating effectively with teachers, parents, and other staff members. This position requires a strong commitment to the educational and emotional well-being of students, as well as the ability to adapt to the diverse needs of learners. The assistant will participate in training sessions and professional development opportunities to enhance their skills and knowledge in special education practices. In addition to direct support for students, the assistant may also assist in preparing instructional materials, organizing classroom activities, and ensuring that the classroom environment is conducive to learning. This role is vital in helping students achieve their educational goals and promoting their independence and self-advocacy skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist certified special education teachers in implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) for students.
  • Provide one-on-one support to students with special needs during classroom instruction and activities.
  • Facilitate small group instruction to enhance learning outcomes for students.
  • Monitor and document student progress, behavior, and academic performance.
  • Communicate effectively with teachers, parents, and other staff regarding student needs and progress.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's degree or higher preferred.
  • Experience working with children, particularly those with special needs, is highly desirable.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with students, teachers, and parents.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team in a school environment.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine interest in supporting students with disabilities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification as a Teacher Assistant or Paraprofessional is a plus.
  • Experience in a classroom setting, particularly in special education, is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of special education laws and best practices.
