The position of Special Education Teacher (Emotional Support K-5) at Pittsburgh Public Schools is a vital role aimed at effectively educating and supporting students with emotional and behavioral challenges. This position is directly supervised by the School Principal and is responsible for ensuring that students are not only learning academically but also developing strong character and gaining essential skills that prepare them for future college and career opportunities. The teacher will be tasked with planning lessons that target specific skills, managing classroom behavior, and engaging students in meaningful lessons. A key aspect of this role is to cultivate students' interest in education while incorporating culturally responsive pedagogy into the classroom environment. The teacher will work for 10 months during the school year, providing a safe, equitable, and inclusive school environment for all students. Responsibilities include planning, developing, and submitting culturally responsive lesson plans that facilitate active learning, implementing a rigorous and culturally relevant curriculum, and utilizing technology to support and differentiate instruction. The teacher will also manage student behavior, develop and administer assessments to evaluate student progress, and adapt teaching methods to meet the diverse learning styles and needs of students. Collaboration is essential in this role, as the teacher will work closely with other educators, central office staff, and school administrators to improve instructional practices. Engaging parents and community stakeholders is also a priority to enhance students' skills and abilities. The teacher will maintain accurate records of student attendance and progress, supervise students during safety drills, and participate in various meetings and professional development opportunities.
