About the position

The Special Education Teacher at the Montessori Association of Covina is responsible for creating a nurturing and supportive learning environment tailored to the individual needs of each child. This role involves working with a diverse group of students, including those with physical disabilities, sensory impairments, speech difficulties, and autism. The teacher will engage in various daily responsibilities, such as teaching small groups of students both inside and outside the classroom, preparing and executing lesson plans, and assessing student development. The teacher will also develop and adapt individualized teaching methods based on the Montessori Method, utilizing special tools and equipment to foster an engaging learning atmosphere. In addition to direct teaching, the Special Education Teacher will collaborate with the Class Teacher and Lead Teacher to enhance the overall learning environment. Regular communication with parents regarding their children's progress and recommendations for home support is essential. The teacher will also work with local resource and referral agencies to provide access to additional resources that can benefit the child's health and development. Familiarity with the Montessori Method, including Creative Curriculum and Reggio principles, is crucial, as is the ability to use the Desired Results tools for tracking children's progress. The position requires a strong commitment to planning and organizing educational activities, ensuring the safety and well-being of all children, and developing age-appropriate lesson plans that stimulate all domains of a child's development. The teacher will also be responsible for preparing materials and maintaining a classroom environment that reflects the children's learning and growth. Continuous evaluation of children's development and adapting lesson plans to meet individual needs is a key aspect of this role.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching a small group of students and individuals inside and outside of the classroom
  • Preparing and executing lessons and resources
  • Assessing students' development and work done in the classroom
  • Developing and adapting individualized teaching methods suitable for each student using the Montessori Method
  • Using special tools and equipment to stimulate an interesting learning environment
  • Teaching children using special skills such as Braille, sign language, or lip reading
  • Collaborating with the Class Teacher and Lead Teacher to enhance the learning environment
  • Updating parents on their kids' progress and providing recommendations for home support
  • Collaborating with local resource and referral agencies to enhance the child's health and development
  • Learning and adapting teaching strategies in line with the Montessori Method and Desired Results tools

Requirements

  • State-approved bachelor's degree in special education
  • California special education certification
  • Minimum 3-5 years' experience as a Special Education Teacher in a preschool and kindergarten setting
  • Minimum 2-3 years' experience in a regular preschool/kindergarten classroom
  • Experience as a Student Teacher or internships after college is a plus
  • 12-24 units in Child Development or Early Childhood Education
  • Child Development Permit (must keep valid and updated)
  • Montessori Training Diploma is a plus
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to develop age-appropriate lesson plans and curriculum

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of Desired Results and skill in using DR tools
  • Knowledge of State Subsidized Program, CSPP, and requirements for Center Programs
  • Good communication, problem-solving, and priority-setting skills
  • Ability to use digital tools for inputting developmental data
