About the position

This position is responsible for assessing students' academic needs, designing and implementing lesson plans, and supervising instructional staff under the direction of the Program Director. The role emphasizes the use of Applied Behavior Analysis and evidence-based teaching methods to ensure effective educational practices while maintaining high ethical standards and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains sight and sound supervision of students.
  • Uses approved behavior management techniques to work with students in crisis.
  • Assists students with personal care and hygiene needs.
  • May feed students via feeding tube and administer medications if trained.
  • Follows protocols to report suspected abuse or neglect.
  • Reports unsafe conditions to the Program Director.
  • Creates students' schedules and administers assessments.
  • Designs lesson plans to support individual student development and comply with IEP requirements.
  • Plans and implements therapeutic recreational activities.
  • Completes the VAAP for applicable students and ensures learning materials are available.
  • Evaluates students' mastery of material and modifies teaching methods as needed.
  • Collects academic and behavior data and attends treatment team meetings.
  • Prepares reports on student progress and maintains case records.
  • Leads and coordinates IEP meetings and communicates with parents about student progress.
  • Teaches parents behavioral techniques to support their child's education.
  • Contacts parents during serious incidents and completes body checks as needed.
  • Identifies inappropriately placed children and recommends alternative settings.
  • Creates staff schedules and assists in training new staff.
  • Oversees quality of instruction and advises on performance issues.
  • Models professional behavior and participates in staff meetings and training programs.

Requirements

  • BS/BA degree in education.
  • Current and valid Virginia teaching license with endorsement in a specific area of disability.
  • MS degree in Special Education K-12 and Virginia Teaching certification preferred.
  • One or more years of classroom experience with special education needs.
  • Proficiency with Windows, Outlook, Internet research, and MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Valid VA driver's license with an excellent driving record.
