About the position

Elgin ISD is seeking a dedicated and passionate Special Education Teacher for the Solid Roots program at Elgin Intermediate School. This position is crucial in providing a comprehensive educational experience for students with special needs, ensuring they receive the support and resources necessary to thrive academically and socially. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with students, parents, and staff to develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) tailored to each student's unique needs. This role requires a commitment to fostering a positive learning environment that promotes student growth and development through effective instructional strategies and classroom management techniques. As a Special Education Teacher, you will be responsible for conducting assessments to understand each student's learning style and needs, planning appropriate instructional strategies, and utilizing various teaching methods, including technology, to engage students. You will work cooperatively with general education teachers to modify curricula and assist special education students in mainstream classes. Regular participation in ARD Committee meetings is essential to ensure that each student's educational plan is effectively communicated and executed. In addition to instructional responsibilities, you will also oversee the personal care and medical needs of students as outlined in their IEPs. This includes providing supervision during extracurricular activities and consulting with district and external resources to address the educational, social, and personal needs of students. Creating a safe and conducive classroom environment is paramount, as is maintaining open communication with parents and colleagues to foster a supportive educational community. The position requires a strong understanding of the legal and regulatory frameworks governing special education, as well as a commitment to ongoing professional development to enhance your skills and knowledge in this field. You will be expected to maintain accurate records and documentation as required by federal, state, and district policies, ensuring compliance with all regulations governing special education.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with students, parents, and staff to develop IEPs through the ARD Committee process.
  • Implement instructional, therapeutic, or skill development programs for assigned students.
  • Conduct assessments of student learning styles and plan appropriate instructional strategies.
  • Present subject matter effectively according to IEP guidelines using various instructional techniques and media.
  • Work with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula and assist special education students in regular classes.
  • Participate in ARD Committee meetings regularly.
  • Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and instructional media.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, and feeding of students as stated in IEP.
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities and sponsor approved outside activities.
  • Consult with district and outside resource people regarding students' needs.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for students' development.
  • Manage student behavior and administer discipline as necessary according to IEP.
  • Consult with classroom teachers regarding management of student behavior according to IEP.
  • Take precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Plan and assign work to teacher aides and volunteers and oversee completion.
  • Establish and maintain open communication with parents, students, and colleagues.
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Keep informed of and comply with regulations and policies for special education teachers.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all required reports and records.
  • Attend faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsements.
  • Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area.
  • Knowledge of the ARD Committee process and IEP goal setting and implementation.
  • Ability to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs students.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • One year of student teaching or approved internship experience.
