About the position

The Special Education Teacher - Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing position at Appalachia Intermediate Unit #8 is an itinerant role responsible for providing specialized educational services to students with hearing impairments across various settings. The teacher will develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), monitor student progress, and collaborate with other educational staff to support the unique needs of each student. This position requires a strong understanding of special education regulations and effective teaching strategies tailored to students with exceptionalities.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge of student characteristics of age group(s) and exceptionality group(s).
  • Develops and implements IEPs for students, meeting all timelines established by federal and/or state regulations.
  • Monitors and assesses the progress of each student toward achieving educational goals set forth in the IEP.
  • Maintains current records for all students including evaluation reports and IEPs in accordance with regulations.
  • Uses appropriate diagnostic and evaluative methods to determine the effectiveness of the IEP.
  • Delivers differentiated instruction and develops lesson plans and instructional materials.
  • Utilizes positive behavior support strategies when addressing challenging behaviors of students.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with peers, support staff, and parents.
  • Administers appropriate assessments based on student needs and state regulations.
  • Communicates effectively in verbal or written form in a professional and timely manner.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Special Education
  • Pennsylvania Department of Education Teaching Certification
  • Current and acceptable clearances: Act 34, Act 151, Act 114, PDE6004, and Act 168
  • Certificate of medical examination and tuberculosis test upon hire
