About the position

The Special Education Teacher at Uplift Mighty Middle School is responsible for providing specialized instruction to students with disabilities, ensuring they have access to appropriate learning activities and experiences that foster their intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. This role involves developing individualized education programs (IEPs) in collaboration with students, parents, and other staff members, and implementing tailored instructional strategies to meet the diverse needs of each student. The teacher will work in various capacities, including self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant settings, as necessary. The teacher is expected to arrive at school 15 minutes before carpool and remain until designated by the School Director, participating in professional development and staff meetings. Responsibilities include managing classroom behavior, preparing instructional materials, and ensuring compliance with IEP guidelines. The teacher will also conduct assessments to evaluate student progress and provide necessary personal care as outlined in the IEP. In addition to instructional duties, the Special Education Teacher will maintain effective communication with parents, students, and colleagues, fostering a positive school culture. The role requires collaboration with classroom teachers to support special education students in regular classes and participation in ARD Committee meetings to review and update IEPs. The teacher will also oversee the work of Teacher's Aides and volunteers, ensuring a supportive learning environment for all students.

Responsibilities

  • Provide appropriate learning activities and experiences for special education students.

  • Design instructional materials and lesson plans tailored to student needs.
  • Participate in school-wide and individual professional development.
  • Attend and contribute to staff meetings and ARD Committee meetings.

  • Communicate effectively with parents, students, and colleagues.
  • Conduct assessments to evaluate student success and progress.
  • Oversee personal care and medical needs of students as stated in IEPs.
  • Support a positive professional school culture and uphold school policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Texas Teacher Certification with required special education endorsements or ability to obtain such certification.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook).
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of personnel, students, and parents.

Nice-to-haves

  • Spanish speaking is a plus.
