About the position

K12, a Stride Company, is dedicated to providing families with an online option for a high-quality, personalized education experience. The Special Education Teacher at Iowa Virtual Academy (IAVA) plays a crucial role in delivering specific course content in an online environment, focusing on the individual needs of students as defined by their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). This position requires a state-certified teacher who is responsible for providing instruction, support, and guidance to students with special needs, ensuring compliance with all necessary documentation and services as determined by the IEP team. The Special Education Teacher will actively engage with students and parents to advance each student's learning, ensuring that all special education and related services are provided. This includes developing compliant IEPs, progress reports, and facilitating collaborative special education meetings. The teacher will utilize provided resources to ensure accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities, ensuring their inclusion and success in the general education classroom. The role also involves collecting data to monitor student progress towards IEP goals, documenting all interactions with parents and interventions, and analyzing student data to prescribe necessary remediation and enrichment. This full-time position requires the ability to work independently, typically 40+ hours per week, and maintain a professional home office environment. The teacher will provide rich and engaging synchronous and asynchronous learning experiences, demonstrating a commitment to personalizing learning for all students and maintaining high expectations for student success. Communication with families is essential, as is supporting learning coaches/parents with curricular and instructional issues in a virtual classroom setting. Additionally, the role may require up to 20% travel for professional development and student testing.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver specific course content in an online environment for students with special needs.
  • Provide instruction, support, and guidance to students as defined by their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Communicate with parents and related service staff to ensure appropriate therapies are provided.
  • Develop compliant IEPs, progress reports, and other required special education documentation.
  • Facilitate and lead collaborative special education meetings, including annual IEP meetings.
  • Use provided resources to ensure accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities.
  • Make modifications and accommodations to lessons and assessments as specified by the IEP.
  • Ensure inclusion and success of students in the general education classroom.
  • Collect data and work samples to monitor student progress towards IEP goals and objectives.
  • Document all contact with parents and interventions with students.
  • Analyze student data to prescribe remediation and enrichment as needed.
  • Provide engaging synchronous and asynchronous learning experiences for students.
  • Maintain a grade book ensuring student academic integrity and alert administrators to concerns about student performance.
  • Prepare students for high stakes standardized tests.
  • Establish and maintain positive rapport with families and communicate regularly with students and learning coaches/parents.
  • Support learning coaches/parents with curricular and instructional issues in a virtual classroom environment.
  • Travel up to 20% of the time for professional development and student testing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field.
  • Active state teaching license in Iowa.
  • Ability to clear required background check.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other teachers to interpret and produce student data.
  • Receptive to receiving coaching on a regular basis with administrators.
  • Ability to embrace change and adapt to ensure excellent student outcomes.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to rapidly learn and adapt to new technologies and teaching platforms.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
