As a Special Education Teacher at Thresholds High School, you will play a crucial role in the lives of young people aged 16 to 21 who are facing serious mental health challenges. This Illinois State Board of Education certified therapeutic day school operates year-round, providing a unique blend of flexibility and support to help students not only earn their high school diplomas but also achieve their transition goals. The school is dedicated to addressing the specific needs of students who have experienced anxiety, frustration, and school refusal, which have hindered their academic success in traditional settings. In your capacity as the lead teacher, you will be responsible for educating a classroom of up to 8 students. This involves developing a comprehensive course of study that adheres to the curriculum guidelines set forth by the school district and state requirements. Your lesson plans will need to be tailored to accommodate three or more levels of academic ability and previous achievement, ensuring alignment with each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP). You will supervise the classroom, instruct students daily with the assistance of a teacher's aide, and monitor and grade student performance. Your role will also include supporting students in their academic achievements, guiding them towards graduation, and preparing them for their next steps in life. Documentation is a critical aspect of this position; you will conduct standardized tests in accordance with district policies and state laws, while also maintaining accurate records of academic performance, attendance, and social acclimation. The culture at Thresholds is one of collaboration and support, equipping you with the necessary tools and resources to provide the best care for your students. Given that students come from various suburban and Chicago home districts, you will work closely with these districts and the Young Adult Program treatment team. Additionally, there will be opportunities for training and professional development to enhance your knowledge and skills in harm reduction, trauma-informed care, and other evidence-based practices.
