The Special Education Teacher, under the direction of the Special Education Program Administrator, provides quality services to special education students from kindergarten through grade 12. This role is essential in ensuring that students with a wide range of learning, mental, emotional, and physical disabilities receive the support they need to succeed academically and socially. The Special Education Teacher is committed to team participation in planning and implementing student programs, which includes special instruction, tutorial assistance, and consultation with general education staff. In this position, the teacher prepares student education plans in consultation with parents and department team members, ensuring that each plan is tailored to meet the unique needs of the student. The teacher designs instruction that parallels the general education curriculum, allowing students to engage with the same content as their peers while receiving the necessary accommodations. Additionally, the teacher assists parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and other professionals in developing educational plans that promote the students' educational, physical, and social development. The Special Education Teacher also serves as the coordinator of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) implementation, working closely with general education staff to monitor student progress and participate in the review and revision of IEPs as appropriate. Maintaining accurate student records is crucial, as is mentoring and supporting teaching assistants who provide direct support to students with disabilities. The teacher plays a vital role in preparing students for grade transitions and life skills, assessing their skills and educational needs, and tracking their performance. Effective communication with students, parents, and other teachers is essential to maintain positive relationships and ensure a collaborative approach to each student's education. The teacher must also adhere to all School District policies and procedures.
