About the position

The Special Education Teacher position is a 10-month role at an elementary school, aimed at providing students with disabilities a comprehensive educational program that fosters their physical, social-emotional, psychological, behavioral, and intellectual growth. The teacher will be responsible for creating an inclusive classroom environment that meets the diverse needs of students, ensuring that each child can reach their fullest potential. This role requires a proactive and optimistic individual who can encourage and sustain students' efforts towards their educational goals. The teacher will work closely with students, parents, and other educational professionals to develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) that comply with state education mandates. The teacher will assess students both informally and formally to tailor classroom programs to individual needs. Responsibilities include designing appropriate activities to meet IEP goals, supervising students, maintaining attendance records, and providing assistance with regular class assignments. The teacher will also collaborate with regular classroom teachers to interpret students' abilities and disabilities, ensuring that all students receive the support they need. Regular communication with parents and staff is essential to discuss students' progress and any necessary interventions. Continuous professional development in the field of special education is encouraged to enhance teaching practices and student outcomes. The evaluation of the teacher's performance will be conducted annually by the Building Principal, Assistant Principal, Curriculum Coordinator, and other designated administrators, in accordance with the established agreement between the Superintendent and the Lyons Teachers' Association. The terms of employment will align with the policies set by the Board of Education.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises students assigned to them.
  • Assesses students, both informally and formally, to provide an individualized classroom program.
  • Designs plans and appropriate activities to reach individual pupil IEPs.
  • Provides an individualized education program for students with disabilities consistent with State Education mandates.
  • Establishes a classroom environment that addresses students' social/emotional and behavioral needs as well as academic needs.
  • Assists and counsels students in making realistic assessments of their abilities and establishing educational or occupational goals.
  • Keeps attendance records and other reports pertinent to the program.
  • Provides continuous consultation and/or management outside of the classroom to appropriate personnel when warranted.
  • Provides assistance to students with regular class assignments.
  • Assists in screening, evaluating, and recommending placement of students in the school's program.
  • Works cooperatively with regular classroom teachers and staff to meet the individual needs of students with handicapping conditions.
  • Assists other professional staff members in identifying, recommending, and resolving psychological or disciplinary actions unique to the student.
  • Confers frequently with parents, professional staff members, building-level administrators, and supervisors regarding the student's potential.
  • Participates in continuous professional growth and development related to teaching and specific areas of expertise.

Requirements

  • New York State provisional or permanent certificate in the field of Special Education.
  • Experience, ability, personality, energy, and maturity to meet the everyday demands of students and the educational environment.
