About the position

The Special Education Teacher at Baltimore County Public Schools is responsible for planning and providing appropriate learning experiences for students with special needs. This role involves instructing and supervising students in various school settings, monitoring and evaluating student outcomes, and collaborating with other educators and parents to support student development. The teacher will create a conducive learning environment and maintain accurate records of student progress.

Responsibilities

  • Meets and instructs assigned classes at designated locations and times.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly learning environment.
  • Plans and implements instructional programs that adhere to system-wide goals and priorities.
  • Prepares and documents appropriate lesson plans based on adopted curricula.
  • Creates an instructional environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Communicates standards, achievements, and deficiencies to students and parents.
  • Maintains complete and accurate student academic, attendance, and disciplinary records.
  • Monitors and assesses students' academic progress.
  • Oversees the appropriate use and care of textbooks, instructional materials, facilities, and equipment.
  • Collaborates with school administrators, other teachers, paraeducators, parents, and community members in the education of students.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on various committees.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in an applicable field.
  • Possession of a Maryland Educator Certificate appropriate to the area of assignment or eligibility for a Maryland Educator License appropriate to the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of pedagogy and special education, including IEPs.
  • Skill in instructing special education students and classroom behavior management.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information and incorporate differentiation of instruction.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of assistive technology and effective instructional techniques.
  • Technology competency, including the use of database, internet, spreadsheet, and word processing applications.
