About the position

Uncommon Schools is seeking passionate Special Education teachers who are dedicated to developing and monitoring accommodations for students with special needs. The role focuses on advocating for students and providing specialized instruction to enhance academic achievement. Special Education teachers will create an inclusive environment that supports students academically, emotionally, and physically while maintaining high expectations for all learners.

Responsibilities

  • Modify, differentiate, and teach an inclusive curriculum that emphasizes diversity.
  • Collaborate with families and Special Education teams to develop 504 and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Create an inclusive and safe environment for self-guided learning.
  • Analyze and respond to trends in student work samples and assessments to ensure compliance with IEPs.
  • Gather academic growth data and write goals for annual IEP meetings.
  • Teach pull-out, push-in, small group, and one-on-one instruction.
  • Implement strategies to differentiate instruction for all learners.
  • Build positive relationships with students and partner with families to support learning needs.
  • Engage in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
  • Participate in weekly school-wide meetings to cultivate community and encourage student achievement.

Requirements

  • A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities (1-2 years experience preferred).
  • Academic expertise in Special Education, the Humanities, Social Sciences, STEM, or related fields of study.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university prior to the start of employment.
  • Meet NJ state certification eligibility requirements (GPA of 3.0 for graduates on or after 9/1/16, or 2.75 if graduated prior to 9/1/16).
  • All instructional staff are required to become certified in the state of New Jersey within a reasonable period after beginning employment.
