About the position

The Special Education Teacher at St Mary's School for the Deaf is responsible for teaching a self-contained class of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students with additional disabilities. This role involves planning and preparing lessons, instructing students using American Sign Language and English, and collaborating with parents and specialists to develop individualized educational plans. The teacher will also participate in curriculum development and maintain classroom order while addressing the unique needs of each student.

Responsibilities

  • Teach a self-contained Special Education class of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students who have additional disabilities.
  • Plan and prepare lessons and instructional materials following curriculum guidelines.
  • Instruct students in various subjects using American Sign Language, English, and Picture Exchange Communication.
  • Confer with parents, testing specialists, and other administrators to develop individual educational plans for students.
  • Prepare, administer, and score academic tests and record results.
  • Meet and confer with parents and supervisors to discuss students' academic and behavioral attitudes and achievements.
  • Assist in selecting appropriate textbooks and learning materials.
  • Participate in curriculum development.
  • Maintain updated lesson plans as prescribed by the curriculum.
  • Intercede in emergency situations as required.
  • Attend departmental and faculty meetings.
  • Maintain order in the classroom.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in Special Education.
  • Eligibility for NYS certification in Special Education.
  • NYS certification in at least one other area or subject.
  • Deaf Education Certification and experience (preferred but not mandatory).
  • Experience working with students with intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, and behavioral concerns (preferred).
  • Willingness to work toward competency in American Sign Language, including completion of a Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) at the proficiency level defined for each job position.
