About the position

The Special Education Teacher position at Leonia High School is a tenure track role aimed at maximizing the learning experience of students with special needs. Under the supervision of the School Principal and Director of Special Services, the teacher will implement district-approved curriculum, document teaching and student progress, and address specific needs of students. The role involves creating a safe and optimal learning environment for students in academics, interpersonal skills, and daily living activities.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct assessments, testing, and diagnostic examinations of students to identify learning issues and recommend corrective procedures.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, modifying instructional methods to fit individual needs.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and assist in developing Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) for students.
  • Implement students' IEPs and behavior management plans.
  • Collaborate with grade level and mathematics teachers, IEP team members, and related services staff.
  • Coordinate with outside agencies and organizations as needed.
  • Coordinate with administrators and other teaching staff to ascertain individual student's abilities and needs.
  • Acquire professional knowledge through seminars, workshops, and research.
  • Organize and maintain accurate record-keeping systems.
  • Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication.
  • Select and requisition appropriate educational materials and maintain inventory records.

Requirements

  • New Jersey Certifications as Teacher of Students with Disabilities and High School Teacher.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching assignments.
  • Successful prior special education teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of Special Education principles, theories, testing, and methods.
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of data information systems and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
