About the position

The Special Education Teaching Assistant will support students in special education programs by providing instruction, behavior management, and personal care under the guidance of certified teachers. This role is crucial in helping students achieve their Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and ensuring a positive learning environment.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct students individually or in small groups under the direction of certificated employees.
  • Assist in implementing IEP goals and objectives for each student.
  • Prepare and adapt lessons and activities as directed by the teacher.
  • Plan, prepare, and assemble homework activities for students.
  • Assist and instruct students in computer usage and operation.
  • Monitor groups during interaction times and maintain awareness of individual student needs.
  • Maintain student discipline and promote positive behavior.
  • Supervise students during building activities and on the playground during recess.
  • Assist with personal hygiene needs of students, including diapering and catheterization.
  • Participate in planned student therapy activities under supervision.
  • Use first aid and/or CPR in emergencies, if qualified.
  • Clean classroom areas following snack times and assist with classroom materials preparation.
  • Supervise students on outings and during lunch periods.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Associate's degree or two years of study at an institution of higher learning (72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits).
  • Some knowledge of effective methods for working with children.
  • Ability to work independently and learn operations and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with respect.
  • Physical ability to attend to students' hygiene and mobility needs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of ASL signing at a minimal level.
  • Experience in a special education setting.
