About the position

The Special Education Teaching Assistant will support students with special needs in the Vallejo City Unified School District. This role involves working closely with teachers to implement individualized instructional plans, provide specialized instruction, and assist with behavior management and daily living skills. The assistant will also supervise students in various educational settings and ensure compliance with Individualized Education Program (IEP) requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Assist teacher in the implementation of individualized instructional plans.
  • Provide specialized instruction to students either individually or in groups.
  • Serve as a one-to-one aide as needed.
  • Oversee students in general education and community-based programs, including supervising recess and group activities.
  • Attend and support students during field trips and vocational training.
  • Monitor students across various educational settings.
  • Ensure accommodations and modifications are effectively implemented.
  • Assist in identifying students' needs and maintaining records.
  • Help maintain order in the classroom and assist with appropriate discipline.
  • Assist students with daily living skills including dressing, toileting, and feeding.
  • Administer student medication under supervision when required.
  • Create and maintain clean instructional materials for special needs students.
  • Collect, review, grade, and file students' work.
  • Conduct classroom activities in the absence of the teacher.
  • Supervise groups of students in special activities.

Requirements

  • High School graduation or equivalent.
  • Must meet requirements of the 'No Child Left Behind Act'.
  • Professional or volunteer work with children or adults with special needs is highly desirable.
  • Previous experience in the specialized care and supervision of children is desirable.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associate degree or higher in a related field (preferred).
  • 2 years of experience in behavior management (preferred).
