About the position

The Special Projects Librarian position in the DC Metro Area is a dynamic role that involves a variety of responsibilities aimed at enhancing the library's research capabilities and resource management. The librarian will perform systematic citation analysis of the journal collection to assess which titles are currently supporting the organization's research programs and identify those that are no longer necessary. This analysis is crucial for maintaining an up-to-date and relevant collection that meets the needs of the organization. In addition to citation analysis, the librarian will conduct bibliometric and usage studies by analyzing raw data from Counter Reports from various electronic publishing sites and the library's electronic resource management system. This data-driven approach will help in understanding the usage patterns and impact of the library's resources. The role also includes conducting Research Impact Analyses using the same datasets to evaluate the organizational impact on science, utilizing data analysis tools and complex biological research to infer trends in scientific publishing. The librarian will leverage a variety of customized bibliometric products and databases such as Web of Science and PubMed to support library services. Regular reviews of electronic journal titles will be conducted to troubleshoot and report any access issues, ensuring that patrons have seamless access to necessary resources. The librarian will also be responsible for generating various statistics and reports related to library resource and service usage, which are essential for strategic planning and decision-making. Furthermore, the role includes providing reference desk coverage, assisting with circulation and re-shelving of materials, and making recommendations for the strategic plan and collection development policy based on user interviews. The librarian will assist in developing policies and procedures to create a modern and collaborative information center, perform cataloging and processing of materials, and ensure the library's resources are effectively utilized and accessible to all patrons.

Responsibilities

  • Perform systematic citation analysis of the journal collection to determine which titles support the organization's research programs today, and those which are no longer required
  • Conduct bibliometric and usage studies by analyzing raw data from Counter Reports from various electronic publishing sites and the library's electronic resource management system
  • Conduct Research Impact Analyses on the same datasets used for citation analysis in various research fronts to determine the organizational impact on science
  • Utilize data analysis tools and complex biologic research to correctly infer trends regarding scientific publishing from both scientists and datasets
  • Use a variety of customized bibliometric products to support service, including leveraging various databases such as Web of Science and PubMed
  • Review access to electronic journal titles; identifying, troubleshooting, and reporting problems with electronic access
  • Perform periodic reviews of electronic holdings for accuracy
  • Provide reference desk coverage and assist with circulation and re-shelving of materials
  • Generate weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual statistics and reports related to library resource and service usage
  • Periodically check, submit help tickets, and assist patrons with library computers, printers, and scanners
  • Make suggestions for strategic plan and collection development policy, based on user interviews
  • Assist in developing policies and procedures and make recommendations for the creation of a modern and collaborative information center
  • Perform cataloging and processing of materials

Requirements

  • ALA-Accredited Masters Degree in Library Science
  • Website administration experience
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Experience performing research involving biomedical information
  • Ability to bend, stoop, and reach to access or shelve collection items and microfilm
  • Ability to carry up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to push and pull objects on wheels weighing 60 to 80 pounds
  • US Citizenship required
