About the position

The Special Recreation Program Manager at Springfield Park District is responsible for the development and implementation of various recreation programs, particularly those tailored for individuals with special needs. This role involves overseeing programs such as Special Olympic sports, summer and winter camps, and other special events, ensuring they are safe, engaging, and meet community demands. The manager will work closely with the Special Recreation Supervisor and other program managers to coordinate activities, manage budgets, and promote programs effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement assigned Recreation Department programs in primary areas of day camps, youth sports, and special events.
  • Innovate and develop new recreation programs based on community demand and cultural trends.
  • Provide safe and innovative Summer and Winter Day Camp activities for children aged 5 to 25.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate Inclusion Aide staff, including program instructors and coaches.
  • Promote interest in assigned programs through publicity and marketing using brochures and social media.
  • Manage program area operating budgets and assist in drafting budgets with the Special Recreation Supervisor.
  • Coordinate with department heads on logistics for programs and special events at park facilities.
  • Manage the District's Online Registration Portal and oversee activity input and facility space management.
  • Evaluate all assigned programs and supervised staff thoroughly.
  • Communicate professionally with staff, volunteers, participants, and the community.
  • Monitor facility and program inventory, supplies, and equipment according to purchasing policy.
  • Monitor recreation programs, activities, and events, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in recreation, sport management, or a closely related field.
  • 1-3 years of supervisory experience in Recreation Administration or Sport Management preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Illinois Food Service Sanitation Manager Certification or ability to obtain it.
  • Experience in managing facility and program budgets preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with social media management for marketing purposes.
  • Ability to adapt activities based on participant skill levels and needs.
  • Knowledge of Special Olympics sports and rules.
