About the position

The Specialist, Academic & Re-engagement Supports at the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) plays a crucial role in enhancing the academic achievement and integration of disengaged students. This position collaborates with various stakeholders to develop and monitor academic support plans, ensuring students graduate on time. The specialist will focus on increasing the Adjusted Cohort Graduation Rate by providing differentiated supports, developing innovative academic recovery options, and addressing barriers to academic success for at-risk students.

Responsibilities

  • Provide intensive differentiated supports to a specialized population of schools to increase the Adjusted Cohort Graduation Rate.
  • Assist schools in developing strategies to reduce off-track students and increase overall graduation rates.
  • Work directly with schools to create effective monitoring systems for locating withdrawn students and securing necessary documentation.
  • Coordinate recruitment efforts for disengaged students using placement data and various information systems.
  • Collaborate with Academic Recovery Specialists to build innovative academic recovery options for students to recover credits.
  • Determine opportunities for program expansion based on school and student needs, including teacher recruitment and developing virtual learning options.
  • Proactively address factors impacting academic success for disengaged students to support their adjustment in school settings.
  • Conduct follow-up calls and school visits to monitor the progress of disengaged students receiving placement services.
  • Utilize and analyze disengaged student data to inform recommendations to school leadership on strategies for preventing disrupted enrollment.
  • Collaborate with Central Services to analyze data and develop innovative instructional strategies for specialized populations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and three to five years of related work experience.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience in the education sector, particularly with high school students.
  • Demonstrated success working with students struggling with academic and/or behavioral issues.
  • Ability to efficiently solve problems and resolve organizational roadblocks.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience in facilitation or mediation.
  • Results-oriented with the ability to collect and analyze data.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous exposure to youth programs or service-learning initiatives.
  • Knowledge of research-based best practices to promote student engagement.
