About the position

The Specialist, Communications & Knowledge Management position at the World Health Organization (WHO) is a full-time role based in Washington, D.C. This position is part of the Innovation, Access to Medicines and Health Technologies Department (IMT), which is dedicated to promoting and implementing technical cooperation in access to quality medicines and health technologies. The IMT department works across various categories, including medicines, vaccines, diagnostics, and medical equipment, to address barriers to access and strengthen regulatory capacities. The incumbent will play a crucial role in developing and implementing the Knowledge Management and Communications Strategy within the department, ensuring alignment with the organization's goals and priorities. Under the supervision of the Director of Communications and the Director of IMT, the Specialist will coordinate the development and execution of communication and advocacy activities that support the department's biennial work plan and strategic objectives. This includes increasing visibility and understanding of the department's technical cooperation with member states and stakeholders, developing educational materials, and synchronizing knowledge management initiatives. The role also involves evaluating knowledge management strategies, collaborating with departmental teams to create strategic communication plans, and leveraging online tools to enhance communication efforts. The Specialist will serve as the focal point for knowledge management and organizational learning, providing training sessions for staff, managing the department's intranet and website, and ensuring the quality of published information. Additionally, the role includes providing editorial support for various materials, participating in the review of the organization's information architecture, and promoting digital literacy initiatives. The Specialist will also support the department's branding and public relations efforts, ensuring alignment with the organization's visual communication standards. Overall, this position is integral to enhancing the department's communication strategies and promoting its initiatives effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the development, adoption, and implementation of the Knowledge Management and Communications Strategy within the Department.
  • Lead the development of the Department's communication and advocacy activities to support the biennial work plan and strategic objectives.
  • Develop, implement, coordinate, and evaluate knowledge management and information sharing strategies and activities.
  • Assist in designing and implementing dissemination, communication, and publication policies to promote technical cooperation projects.
  • Collaborate with teams to develop strategic communication plans for high-priority campaigns.
  • Identify and leverage online tools to enhance communication and advocacy efforts.
  • Analyze web metrics reports to track engagement and inform communication strategies.
  • Provide strategic support for the development of EIH and CMU's products and services.
  • Conduct training sessions for staff on virtual tools and best practices.
  • Provide editorial support for scientific, technical, and promotional materials produced by the Department.
  • Participate in the review process to update the Organization's taxonomy and information architecture.
  • Coordinate with the Library to provide access to scientific articles and bibliographic databases.
  • Act as a contact person for external media requests and support timely responses.
  • Provide technical support in promoting the Organization's branding and public relations efforts.
  • Ensure IMT visibility in thematic campaigns and develop a database of professionals in Knowledge Management and Communications.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in communications, public health, information sciences, information management, knowledge management, or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • Five years of combined national and international experience in communication projects and information and knowledge management.
  • Training in access to medicines and health technologies, and/or methodologies for knowledge management and communication is desirable.
  • Experience designing or implementing communication strategies on innovation and access to medicines and global health issues is desirable.
  • Very good knowledge of Spanish and English, with a working knowledge of another language; knowledge of French or Portuguese is an asset.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and PAHO country contexts.
  • Knowledge of emerging information and communication technologies for knowledge management sharing and virtual collaboration.
  • Skills in electronic/digital library systems and methodologies.
