About the position

As a Specialist in Group Medical Underwriting at Lincoln Financial Group, you will play a crucial role in evaluating and underwriting insurance applications across various lines of coverage. Your primary responsibility will be to assess the risk associated with each application, which includes reviewing initial Evidence of Insurability (EOIs), medical and prescription data, and medical records. You will determine whether to accept, modify, or decline a risk based on an individual's medical history and physical condition, all while adhering to your designated approval limits. This position requires effective communication with clients and vendors to gather necessary information and requirements, ensuring a thorough underwriting process. In addition to your underwriting duties, you will conduct peer reviews and provide sign-off on the work of lower-level medical underwriters, offering mentorship and guidance to Associate underwriters. You will also be expected to identify and communicate process improvements to management that can enhance efficiency and quality within the underwriting department. Staying informed about current and emerging trends in medical underwriting is essential, as you will collaborate with management to incorporate these developments into future solutions. Your role will also involve supporting organizational initiatives and positively influencing change management efforts. You will be expected to perform routine assignments and projects while leveraging your knowledge and expertise in the underwriting function. Flexibility and adaptability to change are key characteristics for success in this position, as you may also provide backup support for administrative tasks and phone support when necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates and underwrites insurance applications for all lines of coverage, making determinations of the terms, coverage, and rating classification within their designated approval limit.
  • Reviews initial EOIs, medical/prescription data, and medical records.
  • Determines whether to accept, modify, or decline a risk through evaluation of an individual's medical history and/or physical condition.
  • Effectively communicates with clients and/or vendors to obtain other needed information/requirements.
  • Conducts peer reviews and signs off on work of lower-level medical underwriters.
  • Provides mentoring and guidance to Associate underwriters.
  • Builds and maintains knowledge within medical underwriting.
  • Identifies and communicates to management process improvements that reduce workloads or improve quality.
  • Adheres to departmental and compliance documentation and reporting requirements.
  • Assists with other underwriting assignments/support and projects as needed.
  • Maintains knowledge on current and emerging developments/trends, assesses the impact, and collaborates with management to incorporate new trends and developments in current and future solutions.
  • Promotes and enhances organizational initiatives by positively influencing and supporting change management and/or departmental/enterprise initiatives.
  • Performs and delivers on routine assignments/projects while simultaneously leveraging and applying knowledge.
  • Ability to adapt and embrace change.
  • Provide back up to admin and phone support when necessary.

Requirements

  • 4 Year/Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience (4 years of experience in lieu of Bachelor's)
  • 1 - 3+ Years' experience in underwriting and/or experience in a medical field directly aligned to the specific responsibilities for this role.
