About the position

The Specialist, Nationally Competitive Opportunities at Western Kentucky University (WKU) is responsible for mentoring students in applying for national scholarships that enhance their academic experiences. This role involves advising students on developing competitive applications, managing programs that promote scholar development, and engaging with various university departments to support students' academic and professional growth.

Responsibilities

• Conduct one-on-one advising sessions to help students and recent alumni develop and pursue a portfolio of nationally competitive opportunities.
• Support international education and critical language study scholarships and public service pathways.
• Communicate with and encourage students throughout the recruitment, application, and selection processes.
• Collect, track, and revise students' application materials, offering feedback for development.
• Serve as university liaison to a portfolio of nationally competitive opportunities, maintaining familiarity with eligibility criteria and timelines.
• Plan, design, and implement workshops and events to promote scholar development and recruit applicants.
• Implement evaluation and assessment processes to collect and analyze program data.
• Develop informational literature to promote the mission of the office.
• Supervise student assistants and/or organizations supporting the office's mission.
• Cultivate applicants through outreach programming in partnership with academic colleges and departments.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
• Ability to work some evenings and weekends and willingness to travel occasionally.
• Demonstrated experience in Microsoft Office (especially Word, Excel, and Outlook) and willingness to learn WKU applications and systems.
