About the position

The Specialist, Payroll at DC Water plays a crucial role in the preparation and processing of payroll, ensuring efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness. This position involves close collaboration with timekeepers and managers to facilitate effective payroll management, while also handling various payroll-related tasks and inquiries from employees and bank personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation and processing of payroll in an efficient, accurate, and timely manner.
  • Set up employee level deductions such as saving bonds and union dues.
  • Set up employee level direct deposit information.
  • Resolve Notices of Change (N.O.C.) from the bank.
  • Process garnishment, child support, tax levy, bankruptcy, and student loan collection orders.
  • Process requests for checks to pay garnishments, saving bonds, and union dues.
  • Process direct deposit reversals and stop payments, confirming with the bank.
  • Set up and maintain tax profiles at the employee level.
  • Maintain employees' work schedules in Ceridian Time & Attendance Systems.
  • Communicate and research payroll information for employees, managers, and bank personnel.
  • Control and file time entry documents received.
  • Audit timekeeping data.
  • Assist in preparing and processing payroll journal entries.
  • Comply with applicable safety rules and regulations.
  • Perform other related duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Six (6) years of progressive related payroll experience.
  • High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
  • Ability to apply a good understanding of payroll procedures and techniques to specific situations.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to tactfully handle payroll questions and resolve problems.
  • Skill in performing basic mathematical computations with accuracy.
  • Knowledge of FLSA and Wage & Hour requirements.
  • Knowledge of applicable software programs (i.e. MS Office suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
