About the position

The Specialized Instructional Assistant for the Bridges Program at Sharon Middle School is responsible for supporting students in grades 6-8 according to their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). This role involves assisting teachers in creating a nurturing and collaborative environment that aligns with educational standards and meets the diverse needs of students. The position requires working closely with students, teachers, and other educational staff to implement educational goals and provide behavioral support.

Responsibilities

  • Practice ethical and professional standards and maintain strict standards of student and family confidentiality.
  • Become familiar with student IEPs, including social/emotional, activities of daily living, and behavioral needs.
  • Assist with specific student supports, either individually or in small groups, in the implementation of educational and IEP goals.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work with diverse learning styles.
  • Reinforce the principles of social interaction programs by modeling positive behavior.
  • Provide support services in all environments of the school setting under the guidance of the lead special education teacher and other staff.
  • Provide behavioral support, including student-specific accommodations and implementation of behavior support plans.
  • Report any issues directly to the classroom teacher and/or the Special Education Teacher.
  • Implement accommodations and modifications to student lessons as directed by special and general education teachers.
  • Assist a substitute teacher when necessary and appropriate.
  • Follow IEP accommodations as directed by a Special Education Teacher.
  • Attend Professional Development as assigned.
  • Assist/accompany students with entering and leaving the building and their mode of transportation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by building administration.
  • Modify curriculum and materials as needed for inclusion opportunities with the Lead Teacher.
  • Maintain a student notebook in an orderly manner as applicable.
  • Record accurate data on skills and/or behaviors as directed.
  • Work with students on the generalization and maintenance of skills.
  • Collect data on targeted skills as needed.

Requirements

  • Minimum high school diploma; two years post-high school education, Associate or Bachelor's degree preferred.
