The Specialty Pharmacy Patient Financial Counselor is a dedicated role focused on providing patient care within the specialty pharmacy program at the University of Michigan. This position is responsible for coordinating medication access and financial assistance for patients, ensuring they receive the necessary support for their specialty medications. The role involves working closely with patients, healthcare providers, and pharmacy staff to navigate insurance benefits and financial options effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate medication access and financial assistance for specialty pharmacy patients.
  • Perform pharmacy insurance benefit investigations and complete prior authorizations.
  • Assist in coordinating specialty prescription drug appeals and financial assistance enrollment.
  • Communicate complex pharmacy benefit information to patients and internal/external customers.
  • Evaluate patient-specific medication and financial situations, providing counseling on coverage terms and benefits.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve pharmacy benefit billing issues related to specialty medications.
  • Identify and implement quality improvement initiatives to enhance team efficiency.

Requirements

  • Minimum of one year experience in a pharmacy or medical office setting with a background in insurance benefits, billing, and patient financial counseling.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong customer service skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor or associate degree in a healthcare-related field or 3-5 years of experience in a pharmacy or medical office setting.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of medical and prescription insurance policies (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid).
  • Analytical skills with proficiency in Word and Excel programs.
  • Experience with Epic, QS1-NRx, and other pharmacy dispensing programs.
