About the position

The Clinical Laboratory Technician position at Duke Health focuses on specimen processing in the Clinical Pediatrics Lab. The role involves ensuring the proper collection and delivery of blood specimens, performing various laboratory procedures, and maintaining compliance with safety and quality control standards. This position operates on a third shift schedule, with rotating weekends and holidays, and is eligible for a commitment bonus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of routine and specialized procedures related to specimen processing.
  • Prepare and initiate special tests and procedures including cytogenetics and Point-of-Care Testing.
  • Obtain total volume, perform aliquot, and distribute urine specimens appropriately.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and medical personnel for problem resolution.
  • Utilize standard equipment to maintain positive patient identification and manage clinical laboratory records.
  • Receive and process specimens according to laboratory protocols.
  • Sort and distribute specimens to the appropriate laboratory staff.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and perform routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Assist with office tasks and maintaining laboratory records.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of a structured phlebotomy training course recommended for phlebotomy assignments.
  • One year of previous clinical lab experience preferred for Clinical Technician I.
  • At least 2 years' experience as a Clinical Tech I or certification as a Phlebotomist for Clinical Technician II.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of medical terms preferred.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
