About the position

The position involves assisting students with disabilities during transportation to and from school. The individual will be responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of students while they are on the bus and during transitions to and from the bus. This role requires effective communication with teachers and parents, as well as the ability to follow established procedures and protocols to support students' individual needs.

Responsibilities

  • Lift and carry students with disabilities on and off the bus according to their individual needs.
  • Supervise students as they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
  • Assist children into the building and to their classroom.
  • Provide support to meet each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  • Manage student behavior and report student discipline problems to the appropriate administrator.
  • Communicate with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior while on the bus.
  • Become familiar with all routes to and from the school campus to be of assistance to the driver.
  • Maintain an updated route schedule.
  • Supervise the use of seat belts, harnesses, or car seats by students.
  • Follow emergency procedures and help the driver administer first aid, if necessary.
  • Operate equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Follow established procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and assisting students.
  • Become familiar with and follow procedures established by transportation and special education offices.
  • Help the driver keep the bus clean.
  • Work irregular hours as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Ability to follow verbal instructions and communicate effectively
  • Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment
  • Ability to work well with all children
