About the position

The SPED SCC Instructional Assistant position at Gadsden Independent School District involves supporting students with special educational needs under the supervision of a teacher or related staff. The role focuses on implementing IEP-related activities, ensuring the safety and well-being of students, and assisting in various classroom and school activities.

Responsibilities

• Assist in classroom management routines.
• Accompany the teacher on home visits as necessary.
• Direct IEP related activities of students under the supervision of the teacher.
• Prepare the classroom for activities under the teacher's guidance.
• Assist in preparing class displays and bulletin boards.
• Keep equipment/materials used by students clean and in good condition.
• Maintain a professional working relationship with employees and students.
• Assist the teacher with all classroom activities.
• Supervise students during playground, cafeteria, in-class, feeding, personal care, and bus loading activities.
• Participate in in-service activities.
• Ride the special education bus as assigned.
• Assist with the physical training and care of students with disabilities as directed by the IEP, teacher, or related staff.
• Monitor/document behavior and implement behavioral interventions as directed.

Requirements

• Passing score on the ParaPro exam (457) or a minimum of 48 semester hours of college credit from a regionally accredited college or university, with specific credits in language arts, mathematics, writing, and reading readiness.
• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
• Ability to write simple correspondence.
• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience working with children with special educational needs.
• Knowledge of IEP processes and documentation.
