About the position

The Special Education Teacher will provide instructional experiences and guidance that are academically and developmentally appropriate for each student assigned to the classroom in the least restrictive environment. This role requires effective communication with students, parents, and colleagues, ensuring a professional rapport is maintained. The teacher will utilize a variety of teaching methods and resources tailored to each subject area, employing student assessment techniques to enhance learning outcomes. In addition to delivering instruction, the teacher will manage the classroom to optimize instructional time and promote positive student behavior in a safe and healthy environment. Recognizing student diversity is crucial, as the teacher will create an atmosphere that fosters student involvement and self-concept. The role also involves collaboration with colleagues, parents, and community members, adhering to board policies and administrative regulations. Additional responsibilities include completing required special education paperwork within specified timelines, preparing for instruction with written evidence of preparation, and maintaining accurate records as required by the school district. The teacher will also be responsible for reporting student progress to parents, attending faculty meetings, and participating in extracurricular activities. The position demands adaptability in curriculum delivery to meet individual student needs and the use of current technology for instructional and management purposes.

  • Leave adequate preparations for a substitute.
  • Develop and implement appropriate classroom management strategies while maintaining high expectations for student behavior.
  • Encourage cooperation between students.
  • Maintain student involvement in appropriate tasks.
  • Use and apply appropriate conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrate public relations skills.
  • Use appropriate techniques, strategies, and materials to achieve the desired instructional goal.
  • Adapt the curriculum to meet the needs of individual students.
  • Use current technology for instruction and management purposes.
  • Use diagnostic data to improve instructional programs.
  • Select, use, and interpret evaluation data.
  • Make yourself available to parents, students, administration, and peers as needed.
  • Attend extracurricular activities.
  • Spend time beyond the school day grading and recording papers, planning instruction, etc. if needed.
  • Report suspected child abuse and neglect.
  • Be responsible for students on field trips.
  • Act as a good role model within the context of the school.
  • Supervise educational assistants, practicum students, student teachers, and high school vocational lab students if needed.
  • Develop and use community and professional resources.
  • Understand and apply learning theories.
  • Accept other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education or a related field.
  • A valid New Mexico teaching license with endorsements as needed.
  • Ability to perform the job and access the environment for which you are hired.
