About the position

The California Virtual Academies (CAVA) is a network of nine public charter schools that provides online and virtual home-based instruction to students from transitional kindergarten through 12th grade across California. The Speech Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA) position is integral to this educational framework, as it supports the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) in delivering effective communication therapy to students. The SLPA will engage with students in both individual and group settings, focusing on various aspects of communication, including articulation, phonology, motor speech disorders, voice, fluency, expressive and receptive language, and social pragmatic language skills. This role is particularly important for students who may be non-speaking or have limited verbal proficiency, as the SLPA will assist in utilizing Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) methods to enhance expressive communication. In addition to providing direct therapy, the SLPA is responsible for maintaining accurate documentation of student progress through detailed case logs of therapy sessions. This documentation is crucial for monitoring progress and collaborating with the supervising SLP in the development and implementation of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). The SLPA will also play a supportive role in the classroom by providing interventions that facilitate effective communication within the learning environment. Responsibilities may include managing speech therapy materials, preparing resources for parents to aid in skill generalization, and scheduling therapy sessions to ensure a structured approach to student support. The position requires a commitment to working during contracted hours, which are set by the public school system, and prohibits holding another job during these hours. The SLPA will conduct therapy sessions online using a HIPAA-compliant video conferencing platform, necessitating the presence of Learning Coaches during these sessions. The role offers part-time hours ranging from 15 to 30 hours per week, with a competitive hourly wage of $36.25. While only full-time employees are eligible for health, dental, and vision benefits, the organization provides training and a supportive staff environment for all employees.
