About the position

Under the direction of the Director of Special Education, the school-based speech language pathologist's purpose is to remediate, ameliorate, and produce functional and measurable changes in student communication problems and related disabilities so that the student may participate as fully as possible in all aspects of life, educational, social, and vocational opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Locates, identifies and serves speech/language impaired persons within designated age group.
  • Screens school system pupils to identify speech/language impaired individuals.
  • Serves as consultant to school personnel and parents in interpreting problems and providing parents with Parental Rights and other information as needed.
  • Assesses communication skills of individuals using diagnostic procedures including norm reference test, language samples, audiometric tests and teacher appraisals.
  • Plans and implements remedial procedures to modify deficient communications skills and utilize Assistive Technology when appropriate.
  • Prepares IEPs for current and incoming students and maintains child count.
  • Directs therapy sessions including speech/language articulation, voice, and fluency.
  • Consults and collaborates with teachers and monitors student progress.
  • Plans instructional programs and preparations.
  • Conducts and participates in child study, eligibility, screening, staff, and departmental meetings and conferences necessary to comply with local, federal, and state laws, rules, and regulations to ensure a free appropriate education and to protect the rights of pupils.
  • Prepares speech and language evaluation reports.
  • Prepares Medicaid plan of care, notes, and bills Medicaid for allowable services.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Must hold or be eligible to obtain a valid school speech-language pathologist license issued by the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.
