The Speech Pathologist II position at Highland General Hospital involves providing professional services related to the diagnosis and treatment of individuals with speech and language disorders. Under general supervision at the entry level and under direction at the journey level, the Speech Pathologist II will assist in evaluating patients' communicative abilities by examining various speech-related mechanisms. This includes assessing vital capacity, respiratory control, laryngeal function, and articulatory movements. The role also encompasses conducting audiological screenings and administering diagnostic tests that evaluate articulation, language, auditory perception, voice, and stuttering. In addition to evaluation and diagnosis, the Speech Pathologist II will carry out treatment plans for communicative disorders, utilizing current principles and practices in the field. This may involve preparing audio-visual aids for patient use and employing standard clinical equipment such as tape recorders and portable audiometers. The position requires counseling patients and their families about the implications of communicative disorders and instructing them on home treatment principles. The Speech Pathologist II will also assist in supervising and training student speech therapists and educating other personnel about speech therapy practices. Record-keeping is a critical component of this role, as the Speech Pathologist II will maintain detailed records of work performed and prepare reports on patient treatment and progress. Participation in interdisciplinary staff conferences and ward rounds is expected to discuss patient care and progress, and the Speech Pathologist II will serve as a consultant in speech pathology and audiology to other disciplines within the hospital.
