About the position

The Sports Editor at the Daytona Beach News-Journal will lead the sports department in covering high school sports, outdoor activities, and NASCAR events, engaging both local and national audiences. This role involves guiding beat writers and columnists, enhancing digital and print content, and collaborating with various newsroom leaders to boost pageviews and subscriptions. The ideal candidate will leverage their journalistic skills to produce impactful coverage and foster audience engagement across multiple platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the sports department's coverage across print, digital, and audio platforms.
  • Guide and edit established beat writers and columnists.
  • Collaborate with photography staff to enhance visual storytelling.
  • Plan and assign coverage for daily, weekly, and major sports events.
  • Engage with the audience through various platforms, celebrating and addressing sports news.
  • Work with the Florida sports reorganization team to meet print requirements.
  • Analyze trends to stay updated on stories impacting local sports fans.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 5 years of reporting/editing experience, with 2 years in a managerial role.
  • Experience in building a brand on social media.
  • Strong writing, spelling, grammar, and AP style expertise.
  • Knowledge of media law and Principles of Ethical Conduct.
  • Effective communication skills with diverse personalities.
  • Ability to multitask and work under deadline pressure.
  • Efficient time management in a 24-hour newsroom environment.
  • Collaborative mindset in a cross-functional setting.
  • Understanding of competition for audience attention and resources.
  • Self-motivated and self-directed with innovative thinking.
