The Post and Courier, the premier news source for South Carolina, is seeking a dynamic sports editor to lead our existing team, promote a tone for innovation and creative approaches, and help develop plans to expand our staffing and visibility statewide. This is a great opportunity for the right editor. We are looking for someone who knows how to get beyond traditional coverage and can set the pace as we create a new kind of sports network for our state—one that fans can't wait to follow. The Post and Courier, privately owned and based in Charleston, is a Pulitzer Prize-winning news operation that has opened newsrooms throughout South Carolina in recent years, including in Columbia, Greenville, Myrtle Beach, and the Hilton Head area. Responsibilities

  • Lead the sports team and promote innovative and creative approaches to sports journalism.
  • Develop plans to expand staffing and visibility of sports coverage statewide.
  • Create a new kind of sports network that engages fans across South Carolina.
  • Produce distinctive journalism, including storytelling, analytical pieces, and watchdog coverage.
  • Experiment with podcasts, video content, and potential live events.
  • Coach reporters and team members to deliver high-quality work.
  • Manage multiple projects and meet deadlines effectively.
  • Respond to the evolving industry and experiment with new digital approaches to grow audience and revenue.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field.
  • A minimum of five years in journalism experience.
  • Leadership experience with a proven record of high-quality, ambitious work.
  • Strong coaching skills to help reporters deliver their best work.
  • Deep understanding of producing sports content in a digital environment.
  • Ability to develop standout content that differentiates from competitors.
  • Desire to produce distinctive journalism across various formats.
  • Collaborative and entrepreneurial spirit with eagerness to try new ideas.
  • Integrity and understanding of journalistic ethics.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with live event coverage.
  • Familiarity with audience engagement strategies in sports journalism.
