About the position

Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company, part of the PPL Corporation family, are seeking Chemical Engineer Co-op students for Spring 2025. This co-op program offers a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in the utility industry, working alongside experienced engineers in various departments. The co-op positions are designed to provide practical engineering applications and exposure to the daily operations of a regulated utility that serves over 1.3 million customers. Students will engage in a stimulating and challenging work environment that emphasizes critical analysis and creative thinking. During the co-op, students will have the chance to work in several departments, including Power Plant Operations, Environmental Affairs, and Gas Storage Operations. In Power Plant Operations, co-ops will focus on projects related to the daily operation and maintenance of power generating stations, utilizing analytical skills to identify root causes of failures and recommend corrective actions. In Environmental Affairs, co-ops will assist in developing and gathering data for environmental compliance reports and permits, as well as conducting site walk-downs and chemical inventory reviews. In Gas Storage Operations, students will learn about the operations of natural gas compressor stations, assist with capital projects, and develop process flow diagrams. The co-op experience is structured to enhance the students' understanding of engineering methods, practices, and programs within the company. Co-ops will perform detailed engineering assignments, support operating and maintenance functions, and assist senior engineers with larger projects. The program aims to foster a culture of safety and environmental responsibility, ensuring that all work activities comply with established regulations and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Work on projects dealing with daily operation and maintenance of power generating stations in Power Plant Operations.
  • Use analytical skills to determine root cause failures and recommend corrective actions.
  • Assist in the development of and gather data for environmental/regulatory compliance reports in Environmental Affairs.
  • Assist with the submission of environmental permits and planning documents.
  • Perform site walk downs and chemical inventory reviews.
  • Learn operations involved with natural gas compressor stations and associated equipment in Gas Storage Operations.
  • Draft, create, and update spreadsheets and investigate materials/equipment.
  • Assist station engineer with capital projects and develop process flow diagrams.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement and suggest improved methods.
  • Gather, correlate, and analyze specific data using established procedures.
  • Perform detailed and/or routine engineering assignments involving established calculations, tests, and analysis.
  • Support operating and maintenance functions with engineering analysis, troubleshooting, and problem resolution activities.
  • Assist Senior Engineers with large projects as needed.
  • Plan and control all activities to provide an accident-free workplace.
  • Conduct work activities with regard to environmental rules and regulations.
  • Regularly review assignments to assure optimum efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Requirements

  • Available full time during the Spring 2025 semester (January - May).
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree with a declared major in Chemical Engineering.
  • Minimum 2.50 GPA.
