About the position

The Design Intern will support the Abrams ComicArts Design team in various design tasks, ensuring smooth workflow across all imprints. This internship is for college students seeking academic credit and offers hands-on experience in the book publishing industry, particularly in graphic novels and illustrated books.

Responsibilities

  • Set up design mechanicals based on templates.
  • Follow process documents to prepare files for lettering and typesetting.
  • Make text and design corrections to cover mechanicals and interior passes.
  • Assist with shipping and scanning artwork.
  • Attend and contribute to cover review meetings.
  • Help create ancillary materials for use by sales, marketing, and editorial, working with the digital asset management system.
  • Adapt foreign-language editions for the US market, such as choosing fonts, revising cover designs, reformatting InDesign files.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a college program with a focus/major in graphic design or illustration.
  • Interest in Comics, Graphic Novels, and Manga.
  • Experience using the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) and Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word.
  • Must be detail oriented and able to work efficiently in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Proactive with strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Motivated to learn, grow, research, solve problems, and work closely with the design staff.
  • Portfolio required.
