About the position

The SQL Database Administrator position is responsible for providing Infrastructure DBA support for all SQL Server applications. This role is critical as it serves as a temporary replacement for a Senior Level DBA, ensuring continuity of support for large and complex applications, including Tier 1 level applications in the Bureau of Labs and Cancer Registry. The DBA will participate in 24x7 software and hardware support, focusing on high availability and disaster recovery, while adhering to industry standards and organizational policies.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Infrastructure DBA support for SQL Server applications.
  • Participate in 24x7 software and hardware support for complex applications.
  • Develop and submit plans for installation, patch management, maintenance, upgrades, and support for database systems.
  • Evaluate impacts of change and new technology, recommending solutions to persistent problems.
  • Serve as Agency Services liaison to external consultants.
  • Follow and enforce database standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Research and draft guidelines within current policies and standards.
  • Monitor space allocation across databases and perform necessary adjustments.
  • Calculate disk space requirements for existing and new installations based on business needs.
  • Modify DBMS parameters based on capacity changes.
  • Configure and execute database integrity checks and monitor their results.
  • Install database management software for development and test environments.
  • Install database patches and service packs for development and test environments.
  • Monitor and support clustered database environments and database replication.
  • Implement strategies to release unused space or repair fragmentation in test and development environments.
  • Execute scripts for creating and modifying database objects as provided by Systems Analysts or Database Architect/Designer.
  • Monitor database backups to ensure recoverability and troubleshoot backup errors.
  • Monitor database jobs and scheduled processes in various environments and participate in troubleshooting.
  • Monitor database environments for issues and problems with functionality, connectivity, or downtime.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of Database administration experience specifically on SQL Server 16 and upwards.
  • Expertise in High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) solutions.
  • Experience with Transparent Data Encryption within SQL Server.
  • Over 3+ years of experience creating, updating, and maintaining systems documentation.
