About the position

1901 Group at Leidos is seeking a Database Administrator to join our team in Blacksburg, Virginia, supporting our Enterprise IT Operations Center. This role presents an exciting opportunity to collaborate with a skilled team of database and systems professionals dedicated to maintaining a secure environment for critical systems. As a Database Administrator, you will leverage your experience while also learning from your colleagues, contributing to the building, maintenance, and support of our customer environments. In this position, you will be responsible for planning and executing database backups, disaster recovery procedures, and failover mechanisms to ensure data availability and business continuity for both on-premises and cloud solutions. You will perform essential patch and security configuration activities to keep the databases secure and up to date. Additionally, you will engage in database capacity planning and scalability assessments to accommodate future growth and optimize resource utilization. A strong understanding of Client/Server Architecture is crucial, as you will need to securely deploy databases both internally and externally. Monitoring database systems to proactively identify and resolve performance issues, bottlenecks, and data inconsistencies will be a key part of your role. You will work within a hybrid multi-location operations team, administering the existing production environment and implementing robust database security measures to protect sensitive data through access controls, encryption, and data masking techniques. Collaboration with development teams will be essential to optimize database design and query performance, as well as to provide support for database-related application issues. Staying current with database technologies, trends, and best practices will enable you to recommend improvements or new technologies to enhance database performance and functionality. Effective communication with executives, managers, peers, and customers is vital, as you will support tickets and manage incidents, service requests, and problems throughout their lifecycle. Your primary responsibility will focus on SQL Server, but you will also be expected to support other database platforms such as Oracle, MySQL, and PostgreSQL at some level.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute database backups, disaster recovery procedures, and failover mechanisms to ensure data availability and business continuity for On-Prem and cloud solutions.
  • Perform patch and security configuration activities to ensure databases under management are properly secured and up to date.
  • Perform database capacity planning and scalability assessments to accommodate future growth and optimize resource utilization.
  • Maintain strong understanding of Client/Server Architecture and how to securely deploy internally and externally.
  • Monitor database systems to proactively identify and resolve performance issues, bottlenecks, and data inconsistencies.
  • Work in hybrid multi-location operations team administering existing production environment.
  • Implement and maintain database security measures to protect sensitive data, including access controls, encryption, and data masking techniques.
  • Collaborate with development teams to optimize database design and query performance and provide support for database-related application issues.
  • Stay current with database technologies, trends, and best practices, and recommend improvements or new technologies to enhance database performance and functionality.
  • Communicate well with Executives, Managers, Peers, and Customers.
  • Support tickets and manage incidents, service requests, and problems through their full life cycle.
  • Perform incident analysis to determine possible cause and potential fix.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and 2 years of prior relevant experience or Master's with less than 2 years of prior relevant experience; relevant experience will be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Proven experience as a Database Administrator managing enterprise-level databases.
  • Familiarity with database security principles and best practices.
  • Strong proficiency in database administration, including installation, configuration, backup and recovery, security, and performance tuning.
  • Knowledge of management tools and utilities for each database platform.
  • Experience with SQL Server Availability Groups.
  • Familiarity with AWS RDS features, such as automated backups, multi-AZ deployments, and read replicas.
  • Knowledge of structured and nonstructured database platforms.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to analyze complex database issues.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • A US Citizen who can obtain and maintain a public trust clearance.
  • Obtain a baseline 8570 certification (IAT Level II) within 3 months of hire date.

Nice-to-haves

  • Relevant certifications, such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate (ExamDP-300).
  • DoD secret clearance.
  • Currently have an 8570 Level II Security+ CE certification (IAT).
