About the position

The SQL Database Administrator at American Greetings Corporation is responsible for managing and administering Oracle databases, providing tier 1, 2, and 3 support, and participating in an on-call rotation for critical issues. This hybrid role requires expertise in database architecture, performance tuning, and backup and recovery concepts, with a focus on ensuring database integrity and security.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for Oracle database backups, design, development, testing, and performance tuning.
  • Conducts after-action analyses when issues arise and plans to prevent future occurrences.
  • Debugs database performance problems and documents results and findings.
  • Acts as a team-wide subject matter expert.
  • Identifies subtle or obscure impacts of proposed changes.
  • Creates estimates for tasks and finishes them within the expected time.
  • Delivers results without requiring rework from other engineers.
  • Learns new technologies and applies that knowledge to achieve goals.
  • Maintains underlying storage and database interaction.
  • Audits databases for access and security.
  • Maintains database access control and privileges.
  • Performs capacity planning for space and performance.
  • Understands specific schema/meta data architecture for various business units.
  • Plans for disaster recovery scenarios.
  • Migrates data among databases and to external sources.
  • Expert in SQL and at least two database-specific variants.
  • Understands replication and high availability concepts.
  • Enforces database integrity through triggers, RI, and constraints.
  • Writes basic stored procedures, functions, and triggers.
  • Understands patching requirements and maintains a patch schedule.
  • Understands basics of database design and modeling.
  • Champions process, documentation, and operational improvements.
  • Provides 24 x 7 support for planned and unplanned activities.
  • Understands basic Linux commands and operations.
  • Understands basic networking tasks.

Requirements

  • Experience with Oracle database management and administration.
  • Strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Linux and shell scripting.
  • Knowledge of backup and recovery concepts.
  • Experience with database performance tuning and profiling tools.
  • Ability to conduct capacity planning and disaster recovery planning.
  • Expertise in SQL and at least two database-specific variants.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with SAN, NAS, and NFS storage solutions.
  • Familiarity with database replication and high availability implementations.
  • Knowledge of security auditing tools and practices.
