About the position

The SQL Database Developer/Analyst position is a full-time permanent role within the Office of the Vice President for Academic Strategy System, specifically under the Hawaii P-20 Partnerships for Education Office. This position is located in Manoa, Honolulu, HI, and is responsible for assisting with database administration during both the developmental and production cycles for the University's data warehouse, data marts, data stores, and Java web administrative applications. The role requires collaboration with source system subject matter experts to understand data structures and definitions, as well as monitoring software versions and vendor announcements. The developer/analyst will also assist in translating business rules into a physical data model and will be involved in creating ad hoc reports and custom views as needed. In addition to database administration, the position entails working closely with the System Architect and other staff to facilitate the migration from development/test environments to production environments. The SQL Database Developer/Analyst will monitor, tune, troubleshoot, and enhance system and database performance, serving as a technical resource to non-technical staff and other IT professionals. The role also includes updating production documentation to reflect any changes accurately and analyzing and processing data into reporting tables and/or ad hoc databases. The position is essential for ensuring the integrity and performance of the database systems that support the educational initiatives of the University. The successful candidate will be expected to possess a strong foundation in database design, development, and administration, with the ability to recognize and resolve problems effectively. The role requires excellent communication skills to work with managerial, administrative, and technical staff to determine information needs and document system definitions. The SQL Database Developer/Analyst will also be responsible for defining user access levels, testing and refining database changes, and implementing backup/recovery strategies. This position is critical for providing project implementation and post-implementation support for administrative applications developed and maintained by the Hawaii P-20 Partnerships for Education.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with database administration during developmental and production cycles for the University's data warehouse and applications.

Requirements

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Management Information Systems (MIS) or Information & Computer Sciences (ICS).
  • 1 year of progressively responsible professional information technology experience (Pay Band A) or 3 years with 2 years comparable in scope and complexity to the next lower pay band (Pay Band B).
  • Functional knowledge of database design, development, and administration principles and methodologies.
  • Ability to recognize problems, identify causes, and resolve routine issues.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to write reports and procedures effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Functional knowledge of systems development methodology and techniques.
  • Ability to learn and apply new programming languages independently.

Nice-to-haves

  • Considerable working knowledge of Microsoft Business Intelligence products and tools.
  • Experience with ETL and online analytical processing and cubes.
  • Familiarity with database and modeling tools.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft SharePoint, PerformancePoint, PowerPivot, and Excel.
  • Experience with Visual Studios and .NET (C#, VB, ASP).
  • Knowledge of XML and XSLT.
