About the position

The SQL DBA position is focused on providing database administration and support for state or federal clients. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of database management systems (DBMS) and the ability to design, model, develop, and support these systems effectively. The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in management information systems or a related field, along with at least three years of experience in database administration. Familiarity with popular DBMS platforms such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, or PostgreSQL is essential, as is proficiency in SQL for writing complex queries and optimizing database performance. In this role, the SQL DBA will analyze data requirements and application architectures, ensuring that database schema designs meet system requirements. The candidate will gather and normalize information related to business processes to evaluate data credibility and relevance. Additionally, the DBA will develop data architecture that supports the information needs of the business while maintaining security and flexibility. The position involves conducting comprehensive data analysis to understand the structure and relationships of existing systems, particularly the FLAIR system and its interactions with departmental systems. The DBA will collaborate with project teams to define integration strategies and develop data migration plans to ensure a seamless transition to the Florida PALM system. Responsibilities also include writing data reports, creating documentation for system configurations, and conducting thorough testing to ensure the accuracy and performance of integrated systems. The SQL DBA will also be responsible for establishing database policies and procedures, evaluating user requests for new data elements, and coordinating the use of organizational data to ensure integrity and control redundancy. The role requires the ability to educate management on long-range data planning and to develop procedures for database recovery in case of hardware or software failures. Overall, this position is critical for maintaining the integrity and performance of the organization's database systems.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, models, develops, and supports database management systems.
  • Analyzes data requirements, application and processing architectures, data dictionaries, and database schema(s).
  • Gathers, analyzes, and normalizes relevant information related to business processes to evaluate data credibility.
  • Develops database and warehousing designs across multiple platforms.
  • Conducts comprehensive data analysis to understand the structure and relationships of existing systems.
  • Gathers requirements from stakeholders for integration needs and desired functionality.
  • Collaborates with project teams to define integration strategies and technical solutions.
  • Develops data migration plans and strategies for seamless transitions.
  • Integrates departmental systems with the Florida PALM system and other relevant systems.
  • Writes data reports and creates documentation for system configurations and integration processes.
  • Conducts thorough testing to ensure accuracy and performance of integrated systems.
  • Provides technical support and troubleshooting during onboarding and integration processes.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams to address integration challenges.
  • Assesses future information requirements to develop long-range database plans.
  • Establishes database policies and procedures.
  • Evaluates user requests for new data elements and incorporates them into the shared data environment.
  • Coordinates the use of organizational data to ensure integrity and control redundancy.
  • Develops database feasibility studies and cost/benefit analyses.
  • Establishes database design techniques using data modeling and prototyping software.
  • Analyzes and proposes changes to database structures.
  • Maintains data dictionary ensuring uniformity of definitions.
  • Determines necessary database security measures.
  • Assists in the selection of database management software.
  • Educates management on long-range data planning and management of data resources.
  • Develops and controls procedures for saving, retrieving, and recovering databases.
  • Coordinates reorganizations with applications and systems staff.
  • Acts as a consultant to applications and systems programming staff on database management standards.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in management information systems or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of experience in Database Administration or relevant computing environments.
  • Familiarity with popular DBMS platforms such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, or PostgreSQL.
  • Proficiency in SQL, including writing complex queries and optimizing database performance.
  • Knowledge of data integration methods and tools, such as ETL processes and data migration strategies.
  • Familiarity with tools like Informatica, Talend, or SSIS.
  • Understanding of API concepts and experience with integrating systems using APIs.
  • Knowledge of RESTful APIs, SOAP, or other web service protocols.
  • Proficiency in data mapping techniques and data transformation processes.
  • Understanding of data warehousing principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with tools like Snowflake, Amazon Redshift, or Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics.
  • Awareness of data governance principles, including data standards and data quality rules.
  • Understanding of data security principles and best practices.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with data analysis tools and techniques for extracting insights from datasets.
  • Experience in creating reports, dashboards, or visualizations to present integrated data.
