About the position

The SQL Developer will play a crucial role in the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's data modernization initiative. This position involves designing, developing, and maintaining SQL databases to support various applications and data analysis efforts. The ideal candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to create efficient and scalable database solutions that enhance public health outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain SQL databases to support applications and data analysis.
  • Write complex SQL queries, stored procedures, triggers, and scripts to ensure data integrity and performance.
  • Optimize database performance by tuning queries and designing indexing strategies.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and implement database solutions.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve database issues in a timely manner.
  • Perform database migrations, upgrades, and backup/restoration processes.
  • Analyze and improve existing database systems for scalability and performance.
  • Ensure database security and data privacy compliance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.
  • Proven experience as an SQL Developer, Database Developer, or similar role.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL and relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, MS SQL Server).
  • Experience with database design, normalization, and performance tuning.
  • Familiarity with ETL processes and data integration.
  • Understanding of data security best practices and compliance standards.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with cloud databases (e.g., AWS RDS, Azure SQL).
  • Knowledge of data warehousing and big data technologies.
  • Familiarity with reporting tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau) and their integration with SQL databases.
  • Certifications in database technologies (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle) are a plus.
