About the position

The SQL Server Database Administrator at Dedicated Tech Services, Inc. (DTS) is responsible for managing and optimizing Microsoft SQL Server database environments, ensuring high reliability and performance. This role involves working directly with government clients in a long-term contract position, providing technical support, and leading database innovation efforts. The DBA will collaborate with various teams to implement best practices in database planning, design, and configuration while also supporting DevOps tools and managing complex SQL environments.

Responsibilities

  • Manage Microsoft SQL Server Database environments including SQL Server databases virtual machine (VM) servers.
  • Ensure best practices in database planning, design, configuration, performance, and capacity planning.
  • Work with the DBA ITM1 to meet team goals and metrics.
  • Provide DBA support for distributed servers in a multi-datacenter environment.
  • Monitor daily activities and performance of complex SQL environments, analyze technical problems, and recommend adjustments.
  • Provide technical assistance to application development regarding SQL design and programming.
  • Configure SQL services such as security, JDBC, and clusters.
  • Plan, install, and coordinate SQL Server releases, migrations, upgrades, and maintenance.
  • Build new environments to support applications as needed.
  • Coordinate with network, IIS administrators, and storage groups for SQL server-based configurations.
  • Develop technical documents, project plans, and interact with customers for proposed solutions.
  • Provide non-production and production support for deploying code and assist in troubleshooting application issues.
  • Support DevOps tools including Ansible, Jenkins, Nexis, Maven, Bitbucket, and Kony Mobile.
  • Lead meetings related to design, implementation, operation, and maintenance of database systems.
  • Design and plan cluster nodes hardware selection and recommendations, configure cluster nodes, and set up interconnects.
  • Monitor load balance and tune cluster parameters for high performance.
  • Configure and implement log shipping and replication.
  • Provide technical leadership that fosters database innovation and champions automation.
  • Support strategic planning for database architecture, resource management, and capacity planning.
  • Evaluate and propose design and process improvements for performance and cost optimization.
  • Identify inefficiencies in current database designs and oversee implementation of improved solutions.
  • Plan and implement capacity and resource expansion for database scalability.
  • Implement effective risk management controls and ensure compliance with technical standards.
  • Lead incident resolution efforts and engage appropriate resources for corrective actions.
  • Conduct research and provide recommendations on database products, services, protocols, and standards.
  • Work in a virtualized infrastructure running various Unix, Linux, and AIX operating systems.
  • Regularly update database security protocols and patching.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to less experienced personnel.
  • Work with project management to support timely client communications about deployments and upgrades.

Requirements

  • 9 years of professional work experience as a SQL Server Database Administrator.
  • Experience managing SQL Server environments including DB VM servers.
  • Four-year college degree or equivalent technical study.
