About the position

The Sr Accountant, External Reporting and Technical Accounting at Cengage Group plays a crucial role in the Finance organization, focusing on external reporting processes and technical accounting. This position involves preparing quarterly and annual financial reports, ensuring compliance with U.S. GAAP and SEC regulations, and collaborating with various internal and external stakeholders. The role is hybrid, requiring one day a week in the Boston office and the rest remote.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the company's external reporting process, focusing on preparation and review of publicly issued quarterly and annual financial reporting.
  • Ensure alignment with SEC rules and regulations for 10-Qs and 10-Ks.
  • Support coordination with internal/external counsel and external auditors.
  • Conduct technical accounting research and prepare memos detailing company-specific positions.
  • Assist with drafting, communication, and implementation of worldwide Cengage Accounting & Financial Policies.
  • Own, maintain, and drive improvements and efficiencies as the system administrator of Workiva.
  • Collaborate with partners in Business Finance, Financial Planning and Analysis, Treasury, Tax, Legal, and global operational accounting teams to ensure accuracy of external reporting and earnings releases.
  • Maintain strong internal controls over applicable areas of responsibility.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required, CPA preferred.
  • 3+ years of increasing responsibilities and related experience, public accounting experience a plus.
  • Experience with Workiva and XBLR is a plus.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to handle fluctuating workload and timelines.
  • Careful attention to detail and the ability to organize.
  • Comfortable operating within a dynamic, complex organizational structure and ability to be flexible and collaborate with the team on different projects and needs.
  • Ability to succeed in a multi-priority, fast-paced and changing environment and readiness to embrace and successfully drive/implement change.
  • Strong communication and analytical skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Workiva and XBLR is a plus.
